A (disabled) prototype is on the trunk at rev 2042.  Here is the

To repeat, this should be safe because the new code has been
disabled.  All unit tests pass.

Please report any problems with the trunk immediately.

P.S.  I would say that the new scheme is basically proven at this
point.  I would be quite surprised if serious problems arise later,
but...
