OK, I have uncovered myself as a Windows user :). I install vim using the gvim##.exe for Windows. The vimdoc has this to say: http://vimdoc.sourceforge.net/htmldoc/gui_w32.html#gui-clipboard Indeed, looking at _vimrc, I found that it includes the following right the top (by default on Windows): set nocompatible source $VIMRUNTIME/vimrc_example.vim source $VIMRUNTIME/mswin.vim behave mswin This should sort the confusion, I hope.
