Installing PyQt4 worked, thanks for the tip Leo's snappier now, too. Maybe the need for PyQt4 could be brought to the attention via a dialog window during installation. (I just installed Leo using the download link given in the Python-Announce mailing list, hence I didn't check prerequisites first). Another note w.r.t. quickstart.leo: The node Programming-->External files-->Auto nodes says to use the File menu item 'File -> Read auto nodes". I don't have that menu item.
