The tabula command does that, but without syntax highlighting etc. I think the first step on having more flexible multiple editors is getting the leo text editing widget to behave well as a simple stick it anywhere kind of QWidget. For a tabbed editor like thing, I have the key binding 'quickmove_jump_to = Ctrl-B' so Ctrl-B adds a 'jump to' button for the current node. I find that works well even without persistence because the set of nodes for which I want 'tabs' evolves over time.
