Currently you have to use the context menu Save Layout option, and give
the layout a name, and then use the context menu Load Layout option to
restore that named layout.  In future I imagine there will be a setting
to load a particular layout on startup, the code is just

c.free_layout.get_top_splitter().load_layout(
  g.app.db['ns_layouts']['<layout name>']
)
