I agree it should be possible to escape them, but FYI in the meantime I'm using the "Guillemet" quoting characters « and » for examples I don't want rendered.
I realize this isn't helpful to those that require the normal ones within their content. . . Nice to see you here PMario - one of my intended "target output formats" from Leo is TW, one reason for my ongoing advocacy for on-disk plaintext tiddlers. DokuWiki supports such an approach out of the box, and looks like a great way to enable community collaboration on creating/editing content.
