It may not be specifically relevant here, and apologies if this is obvious 
to you, but in a completely unrelated context I was working with software 
that didn't like symlinks, and discovered bind mounts, which work at a much 
lower level in the OS ecosystem, and hence completely transparently to any 
user-space tools (AFAIK transparently to everything).

This of course isn't helpful in all situations, but thought I'd mention it 
for the sake of future googlers. . .
