I tried the abbreviation but no change. I have verified the problem on 3 
machines; 2 win7x64 and 1 Vista 32.

  There are no settings in any file I use.

@string initial_split_orientation occurs only once in myLeoSettings.leo and 
there is no conflict with the @data qt-gui-plugin-style-sheet settings.
Sorry I can't be more specific but I believe the change occurred 7 to 8 
builds back.
