I can verify this - I have the same behavior on vanilla rev 5776. It
loads horizontally for a split second before reverting to vertical.
Perhaps some old setting in the database?

There are no settings in any file I use.
@string initial_split_orientation occurs only once in
myLeoSettings.leo and there is no conflict with the @data
qt-gui-plugin-style-sheet settings.
Sorry I can't be more specific but I believe the change occurred 7 to
8 builds back.

Works for me: note that you can use v or h as abbreviations::

Might there be a setting in the file you are trying to open?
