Something very much along these lines has been proposed before, and I would like to try exactly what you proposed, different icons to indicate hidden '@auto ' etc. To make it a doable cosmetic change, and not a major revamp of core Leo, my plan would be to have the @auto etc. hidden when viewing the tree, but appear when you're editing a headline.
