I process that, using a combination of python and xslt, producing a file of javascriot code that when run produces the data structures (this was all written before we had JSON). The browser opens an html page that imports the javascript file using a <script> element.
For a Zettelkastens, given that @andyjim has a large pile of existing note files, the big issue is how to get years worth of notes into the system in the first place.
