Andy, thanks for your comments. I will give my reaction to them in a
series of posts, one per item.

 1. No lock-in
@andyjim: "I agree with the principle you stated but not quite
understanding the implications. Don't tie data up in a proprietary software
system? Or does this refer to the organization of the notes? Don't organize
them in such a way that would be a confused mess if you took the notes out
of the system? I'm afraid I'm not catching on here."

"Lock-in" is a term often used in connection with so-called open-source
software. It means that if you decide to start using some other software
system, you should be able to take your data and use it with the new
system. If there were a standard format for this kind of thing, then it
should be our choice. But there isn't one. To make this have a hope of
being possible, our system should either use a text format, or at least be
able to export such a format.

This format should be relatively easy to write software to convert it to
some other form, if need be. IMHO, it should also be possible for a person
to read and type easily, so that even without a different system to change
to, there would still be value in the zettels. I picture myself printing
it all out and using it as an actual physical zettelkasten - but maybe
that's too idealistic!

However, consider that you might have to use a computer that doesn't have
our software on it. You might still want to be able to create new notes,
and later import them into our system. I think that's a realistic
scenario. Maybe you had to take a borrowed laptop to a conference, or
something like that, or a tablet that doesn't run Leo.
