From what I understand primitive substitution in LDView doesn't
actually increase the number of segments for each primitve but instead
smooths the normals between them so you don't notice the discontinuities
in lighting when you have 1 normal per face. Since we don't have
lighting this method wouldn't do anything noticeable but maybe they also
increase the sides per primitive as well.

This is from a quick look so I could be wrong.
Primitive substitution does increase number of sides of round primitives (there is a cursor allowing to choose from 8 to 96 segments per circle). Smooth shading is another trick used by LDView (independantly from primitive substitution) to get better lighting. It uses LDraw conditional lines to determine if two surfaces should be "smoothed together".
