Your example of how you want to use JSON looks fine.
Some suggestions:
+ Allow the user to select the default save format.
+ If you phase out some formats, please retain the ability to read them
(or create a stand-alone conversion tool).
+ Please consider writing a formal specification of the JSON schema
used. (See <http://json-schema.org/> for a way to do it.)
