The big boys are now moving their fingers to a new pot named "GNOME
Foundation" (http://www.sun.com/software/gnome/). I bet the future os Open
Motif will depend on the decisions Sun will take regarding the toolkit
used in the Open Source version of StarOffice: if they move to GTK as the
remaining of GNOME, having a free Motif available will not help. On the
contrary, it may be bad for the business. And since Sun, IBM, HP and
Compaq, the main promoters of GNOME consortium are also key members of
Open Group, they can influence on both sides. This may sound as a
conspiration theory, but considering the paths computer industries follow
to make their money, who knows?

It's also interesting to note that, according to the press-release
(http://www.gnome.org/pr-foundation.html), even FSF is a now a member of
an "Open Source" project. Ohmy, how things change rapidly these days...
