Sure, you don't have to pay royalties, but I'm not sure if the vendor
would pass on the savings onto the consumer.

The royalties might also be just for the coding and not decoding, so
there would be no difference on the price of the device. I'm not too
sure here.

Basically, I wouldn't think there are any because there's just no
market for it. Image a computer that was unable to run Windows or
MacOS. You can run any BSD, Linux, OpenSolaris... It'd be a great
computer, everything open, but if most people aren't gonna want to use
it, you just don't produce it.

Again, I hope we can do this one day, but today, that's not the case.
