So do I. I'd pay a premium for a player that supported only open
formats, if I could get one. Problem is, I can't.

I think that would be a very shaky theory.

Two factors come into the cost of a product like this. Simplicity is
one, but sales volume is a more important one. A gizmo that sells
millions of pieces can justify custom silicon and amortize the price
of setting it up.

If huge volumes of e.g. an ogg+speex-only flash player would sell,
then perhaps it could be done more cheaply, especially since it
wouldn't have to have the patent licence fee as part of the cost.

But for the handful of people like thee and me who'd favour a player
because it didn't support mp3, the cost would end up being higher
than things like iRiver that support both.

What I'm hoping and praying is that the Rockbox replacement firmware
project comes through; if at some point I can build my own firmware,
I'm hoping to try and craft one up with ogg, speex, and flite
(text-to-speech synthesis).
