My dentist lent me a book named "A Mouth Full of Poison - The Truth About Mercury Amalgam Fillings".
Like others have said, there is evidence both ways. My personal experience: On account of me having my jaw somehow broken and heal wrong while 12 or so years old (never knew or felt it, just later in life my jaw wasn't straight, causing a strange bite), and just in general tooth problems, I have upwards of 40 metal fillings and who knows how many composite, with more in the past being replaced by crowns. I get my blood tested throughly once a year (not sure if they test for mercury, will have to take a look) and nothing has shown up.

My mother went to trade school and worked a few years as a dental assistant in the late 70's before having me and my sister, and no problems there either. When I asked her her opinion, she said "dentists have been using these fillings for ages" and she believes it to be an old wifes tail. The only warnings the dental school told her was to be careful with gold rings, since it will discolor them. She is out of the loop nowadays, so maybe new evidence has shown up. Dunno.

And if it is the truth, I'm not spending money or time to replace all my fillings! ;)
