The fact that you asked that question does not bode well. LFS isn't the
beginning of the learning curve. You should really spend some time using
a linux distro first....
I would really like to congratulate in particular Richard and Archaic on
their efficient, tactful handling of this thread. There is hope for the
world! They have revived my faith in human nature.
IMO, r3al1tych3ck certainly deserved the mini-flaming that he received.
But be honest: how many other readers of this thread had the same gut
reaction
go through their heads for an instant, or at least thought something like
*groan*, where do we start with this guy?
I mean clearly Chris was trying to embark on a project of stripping his
motorcycle into
it's component parts and reassembling and 'tuning' it before he had even
learned to
start the motor or ride it, and without even knowing whether it had a
2-stroke
or a 4-stroke engine. But he asked his questions politely and was thankful
for the helpful
answers he received. The only thing I can fault him on was coming back and
asking too many questions before he had even read the preface to the book.
It is the spirit of the replies I chose to cite above, and other helpful
ones from John, Warren, Jason,..., that make FOSS the popular success that
it is. Without that spirit, OSS would be the exclusive domain of a few
arrogant geeks.
And Chris if you are still reading, welcome to GNU/Linux. I wish you luck
and much fun. Nobody is going to hold your hand all the way, but if you do
your homework there are a lot of people out there willing help out answering
specific questions. And once you have learned to ride your Linux motorcycle
and change the oil and you want to better understand what makes the engine
turn by stripping it down and rebuiling it, then I guess we might see you
back here.
Brandon.
