I'm trying to make sense of a problem - I had my server and a test machine
plugged into a surgemaster distribution board, along with ethernet switch
and KVM. The server had been running, the test machine had been shutdown. I
came into the room and there was a siren sound. It seemed to come from the
area of these machines - tried to boot the test machine to do a clean
shutdown of the server, but it didn't boot (no video). Eventually I managed
to stop that noise by turning off the board. Removing items one by one
showed that the siren only happened if either PC was pluggen in.

I still could not tell where the sound was coming from (too high-pitched
for me to tell - it's everywhere), so I plugged the test machine directly
into the wall socket : if I turn on the PSU, the siren sounds (I had
thought it might have been coming from the surgemaster iteself, but
obviously not).

With the "server" (an old desktop box) the alarm sounds if I press the on
switch on the front of the case .

Google results are old, and focus on the CPU fan failing, or on memory
problems. I can understand that on the server, but not on the machine which
only had the minimal "off" power consumption whenever something happened.

Any suggestions, please ? I can't access my main mail, or my notes and
work-in-progress, because they are all on the server so I'm unproductive
for the moment. I would like to get some understanding of what might have
happened.
