As has been mentioned before, there should not be spaces around the = sign. If you are somehow getting extra spaces when copying and pasting the command, there is probably a problem with the browser or whatever you are using to view the book, or you are reading some copy, such as from a mirror or perhaps a translation, that is faulty. Are you using the book directly from the linuxfromscratch.org site, or from somewhere else?

second error

when I run the command *mkdir -v $ LFS/tools
 *in the line above it says you can not create directory because it
already exists but the bottom line says there is no directory or file,
now I copy and stick it without so write it should not receive errors
are you sure that the book is correct?


Yes, the book is correct. If $LFS is properly defined, and the directory (/mnt/lfs for example) does exist, that command works just fine.
