You seem to have problems identifying what you are doing differently
from the book.  Paul pointed out that the export should not include
spaces.  Now, you are querying the case: I assume that what the book
*actually* said is

 export LFS=/mnt/lfs

: is that (capitals or uppercase or majuscule for the variable,
lowercase for directories, no spaces) what you can see in your copy ?

If so, the variable you are setting ('lfs' in your case, 'LFS' in
ours) needs to be uppercase because that is how it is used
throughout the book.  But the spaces will be the reason why your
attempt to run that command failed.  Alternatively, your shell is
something weird such as a csh variant which does not understand
'export'.

Generally, questions about building LFS are best asked on the
lfs-support list.  But it always helps if you explain what you are
doing differently.
