I'd like to remind everybody that LFS will have to add the nobody user/group to section 6.6 (Creating Essential Files and Symlinks). I'd also like to point out that BLFS uses nobody as uid 99 and nogroup as gid 99. The nogroup group is used for fam, kdebase, stunnel, nfs-utils, and samba. If there is a way to make udev use nogroup, it would help the consistency with BLFS.
This is certainly something to think about. And it brings up something that I was opposed to at first, but I've come around on and I think it needs to be addressed. Basically because of udev, I think there should be an (unofficial) system user and group list for the LFS projects. This goes hand-in-hand with Jim's pleas some time ago to get everybody on the same page. The fact is that when you get done with a CLFS install vs. an LFS install, there are some small differences. I think these should be eliminated if possible. One spot where the differences can cause a problem is uid/gid. In BLFS, Bruce created a list to use. In CLFS, there's a suggested list to use. In LFS, there is a small list. They are here: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/svn/postlfs/users.html http://cross-lfs.org/view/1.0.0rc5/x86/boot/pwdgroup.html http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/view/development/chapter06/createfiles.html What I'm looking for here is not to say that any of the books mandate which users or groups are installed. I don't care if the CLFS guys want to create a different group list than what's in LFS. What I'd like to see is that there's a list of ids for people to use so that they can follow any of the books. This is most important in BLFS, obviously, since that's where most of the software that attempts to run unprivileged is installed. So, to conclude... The nobody user/group is going to have to be added to the Creating Essential Files page in LFS. But I also think the separate projects should put their heads together and come up with a list for everyone to use. I should probably start a separate thread about this. -- Dan -- http://linuxfromscratch.org/mailman/listinfo/lfs-dev FAQ: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/faq/ Unsubscribe: See the above information page
