Hello, some pages and blfs-dev posts mention optional dependencies of packages on such things as Valgrind and ElectricFence (see cURL, WvStreams, GStreamer and its plug-ins, FLAC, kdenetwork, CUPS, Samba, LAME, Dillo, GnuCash, Pilot-link, Ghaphviz, and ImageMagick pages). Some of such pages explicitly mention the benefit from such optional dependencies (e.g.: needed for a testsuite), some don't.
Since debugging utilities are not needed for a regular user (i.e., not a developer) and only slow the application down (or take extra build time), I propose to completely stop mentioning them as dependencies, unless they are used only during a testsuite (and this fact should be documented). -- Alexander E.
