There's nothing wrong with it that I know, but it is just redundant with 
'uname -m' and AFAICT it's not used in Linux (it does seem to be used in 
BSD).  My test build without it has not shown any problems yet and I'm 
halfway through Chapter 6.

Evidently the coreutils authors don't seem to think it necessary because 
it's not built by default.
