Hi, The speakup screen reader is now in the staging area of the linux
kernel and should probably be built as modules or directly into the
kernel. I know that in Debian the speakup_soft module is loaded into
the initrd if you install with speech then the espeakup program is
loaded after alsa to start the screen reader. Personally I like using
speech-dispatcher and speechd-up yes they say on their web sites they
are outdated but they support more then just espeak. I get the fact that
not all users are blind so think if the live CD had no boot prompt
timeout and had a shortcut in the menu for starting speech for blind
users that is what the Debian discs do as well as have a beep at the
boot prompt the control+G at the beginning of the boot.msg file on the
disc. Hope this helps some. Nick Gawronski

Top posting for blind readers.
This is the first time I've seen any request to support blind
readers. I would think that the host system would handle things for
LFS, but I understand the issue for BLFS. I'll look into adding the
speakup screen reader. Building speakup from within chroot should
minimize the time without screen reader support.
I looked for speakup on google and it gave
http://www.linux-speakup.org/, but it appears to be down. I got an
"address not found" when trying to go to the site, If you know of a
better URL, let me know.
I did find
ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware-current/SPEAKUP_DOCS.TXT
Created BLFS ticket #7754.

Hi, I also am totally blind and think the new live disc should
include the
speakup screen reader and sound card support as most newer systems don't
have built in serial ports so using an external hardware voice
synthesizer
is not possible. Also, Reading the normal book I understand about no
sound card support like alsa utilities but for a blind user who requires
it for speech output could this not be moved to the LFS main book? Once
the disc is built putting directions on how you built the disc would be
very useful as well as having the disc load all of the way into ram
so the
physical disc can be removed from the drive would be a very useful
addition. Nick Gawronski

I've been thinking thinking about a new Live CD/Rescue CD based on
LFS.
It would be much less ambitious than the old one that included an X
implementation.
What I had in mind is a base LFS system with the following:
gptfdisk
Current fdisk tools in util-linux should support gpt. Is there any
advantage to gptfdisk now?
