Please ignore that - PEBKAC.  I seem to have garbled my *glibc*
script, it contains
 ln -sfv /tools/lib/gcc /usr/lib
which I first put there nearly 2 years ago.  Obviously, I should
have removed that at some point, but before r11588 I was ok.
