I _think_ the problem is from grpconv, it seems to be badly behaved for me these days (e.g. non-zero status) so I distrust it. [ aside - I never used to run grpconv until I became an editor, oh the joys of following the book! ]

Stephen, I think the file contains a process number. Take a look at that process with ps and the number ('ps 26708') and see if it tells you anything about the process (hopefully, the full command and any arguments, but any output will show the process is still running).

If the process is indeed still running, and is grpconv, kill it : first try -HUP, but use -KILL if that fails. Then see if the problem vanishes.

 If the process is a different command, *don't* blindly kill it.

 OTOH, if that process is _not_ still running, I'm stumped.
