I most definitely did not make it through the first time without a problem. I had a number of problems, and I think earlier versions of the book weren't as good about noting minimum required versions of packages (in the host system) as the current book. But despite the problems, I consider the whole thing a smashing success - I'm a hobbyist here, not an IT developer or support person, and my last serious exposure to computers as something other than an end user was a very long time ago. But I can't think of many things I could have done that would gotten me up to speed as effectively as building an LFS did.
