I'm not sure if it needs the stage1_5 files to be there when grub is
installed in the MBR or boot sector. It can't hurt, though. I'm kind
of fuzzy on some of the details of grub. I would try to redo the
"setup" command from the grub shell.

Did you install grub to the MBR of the disk or the boot sector of your
LFS partition? I think you probably need it in the MBR unless you can
tell the Windows boot loader to chainload grub. FWIW, here's the
manual for grub. Maybe you can find some more info.
