Did you run make test (if you did the book sys it is not recommended)? Anyways I too ran into a lot of trouble with pearl, my problem was partly because I had restarted my host OS (LFS-LiveCD) and not ch-rooted properly into the toolchain, I am no expert and I am actually new to linux, but I'm just saying you can check that!
