Just to satisfy my curiosity. Is there any reason not to just build a
32-bit static grub with "Pure64"? I realize it isn't pure at that point
but it's only to kick things off. I think I found the idea on the CLFS
lists, I just googled and found alot of references to Debian, Gentoo and
others using this method at least at some time for their AMD64 distro.

I did this with an old CLFS Pure64 build ages ago, that really just
followed LFS and pulled patches from CLFS when needed, resulting in a
very similar base system to the JH branch. Unfortunately it was
destined to be a Myth-box and ran into problems with 32-bit binary only
codecs (too many work arounds required) so I scraped it in favor of a
32-bit build.
