Just for the sake of completeness (because I went through the same kind of problem), you also need the correct driver for the IDE (or SATA) controllers (and the filesystem -- ext2 was disabled by default in my case). I suggest using hwinfo to find out the details, sometimes it's just a little difference in the minor version number.
