Robert,

If you're looking for a clean system and/or something else to try, try
building LFS with the package users package management scheme:

More Control and Package Management using Package Users (v1.2)

http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/hints/downloads/files/more_control_and_pkg_man.txt

Also check out my build notes (generously supplemented by two kind
folks here on the developers list):

Build Notes for LFS 6.6 with Package Users

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/blog/lufbery-287892/build-notes-for-lfs-6-6-with-package-users-part-1-3256/

The resulting system is clean, _and_ it uses a really clever package
management scheme.

I'm building LFS 6.7 with it now and my notes from 6.6 still apply.
