Automake and autoconf are not needed to build LFS. They should not be called at all unless you made some changes to the source of one of the packages. You do not say what the results are of the host requirements check from section vii are for your system. Some of the minimum requirements are a bit old, but I don't know of any that prevent building Chapter 5. Chapter 6 is built *only* from Chapter 5 where the purpose is to isolate the new executable code from the host. A grep of all my logs from a current reference build shows not hits for gperf at all. Looking at the glibc source, gperf only appears to arise from locale issues.
