It took a while in my case, with a Realtek device, but in the end I
managed to make it work. 

The author was actually still developing the driver at the time and I
was applying his patches as soon as he was publishing them in the kernel
mailing list ( for which there is an archive in
http://marc.info/?l=linux-wireless )
In the end it was an enlightening experience so I recommend that you
persevere and don't give up.

As soon as you see something like this in dmesg you should be ok to
continue with the rest and get wpa_supplicant (and dhcpcd if needed)
working. Follow the instructions from the book, don't just assume the
packages will work the same way as in other distros.
