I hope it's OK that I post this message on this list. I didn't find any similar "can I do this" type questions in the alfs archives. In preparing for LFS-7.6, I realized that I had concentrated on scripting Ch. 6 and completely ignored Ch. 5. Since I employ Package Users, all my scripts are geared toward that and it would be a *big* project to modify my main build script for Ch. 5. I've been thinking of jHALFS for that.
Maybe it is not what you intend to do, but Bruce Dubbs wrote some time ago that you don't need to rebuild the tools if you have one available from a former LFS-build to build the next LFS. By the way, I wrote a set of Perl-scripts to extract the commands to build LFS out of the LFS....tar.bz2 file. If you are interested I can sent you a copy.
