Just to be sure you can get the right help from the right people, what please 
supply the exact version of the book you are using.  It makes a big difference 
if you’re using sysvinit or systemd.

I think the answer to this question will be “no,” but you are reporting things 
that I have run into.  Is your hardware UEFI with a gpt partition table.  If it 
is UEFI, to boot the way you’re attempting, you need to disable Secure Boot and 
enable Legacy Mode in your BIOS settings.  The answer to Richard’s question is 
important also.  What version of grub are you using?
