 Since we are talking Xorg apps, use bigger fonts!  TTF and OTF
fonts let you choose enormous sizes.  Of course, you need to
configure each application.  I'm not sure if xterm can use TTF/OTF
fonts, probably not - I use rxvt-unicode and put the config in
~/.Xresources (and in .xinitrc I have something that boils down to
xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
but I'm sure you know more about .Xresources than I do.
