 I've only ever tried dropping in _just_ the server on recent
builds.  Mostly, it requires one or two current versions - for 1.17,
xtrans (no idea what _that_ requires compared to old versions), and
when I updated my ati driver on one system that was still using the
previous version it needed current libdrm.

 I avoid them like the plague, except when I'm testing the book's
build instructions.  Nothing I use needs them.  But again, the
current versions fix vulnerabilities present in old versions.
