My impression is that anybody using that hint is just building up
problems for themself. Over the years we have seen lots of weird
and unique problems (on the support lists) which turn out to be
caused by people following that hint. OTOH, perhaps there are
lots of people who used the hint without apparent problems and never
subscribed to the lists - I can only go by the posts I have seen
over the years.

However, in your case I think you are perhaps not ready to try any
deviation from the book (once you have completed and successfully
booted a first build, with enough of BLFS to make the system
minimally-usable to you, then trying another build with changes
(scripting, package management) is a great way to learn.

The reason I think that you are not ready to try any variations is
that you have not yet learned to diagnose simple errors. Two hints:

1. Do the file, and the destination directory, exist ? I hope that
/tools/bin exists, otherwise your problems are a lot more serious.
I believe that the instructions for coreutils, and the defaults,
have changed over the years. Perhaps you need to pass an extra
argument to configure.

2. When you are in chroot, 'no such file or directory' probably
means that a program, or a library it uses, was built in chapter 5
but managed to link to _host_ libraries which are no longer
available.
