Thanks for the info dude. So, did the script work on your system? I'm trying to see if this is a problem with the host system or not. If the script works for you then clearly my Texinfo problems are related to the host system and not the instructions in the book and the solution will be to change to a host which is known to be suitable to build from rather than assert that the instructions in the book are not correct. The script is basically just the commands from the book. Not really worthy of being called a 'script'.
