Do you know which version of GRUB you have?  from the below and my own previous 
playing it sounds like you may be reading instructions for 0.97 GRUB and using 
a 2.X version of grub, or possibly the other way around.  i swear a few hours 
of looking at the grub2.x and 0.97 manuals makes it impossible to understand 
either, they are completely different code with sort-of same sounding but 
different needs, just enough in common to drive you nuts, best to learn only 
one!
