using an initrd i strongly susupect you want grub 0.97, they are just
enough alike to drive one batty! the documentation hasn't become any more
clear and concise either (the old man is usable, it just takes a lot of
careful reading).
1. Don't top post.
2. The problem is not grub, but the kernel.
3. You are advocating a package that is almost 10 years old and does
not, for instance, work with GPT partitions.
