i have not gotten that far into the book, but especially since you're not using 
an initrd i strongly susupect you want grub 0.97, they are just enough alike to 
drive one batty!  the documentation hasn't become any more clear and concise 
either (the old man is usable, it just takes a lot of careful reading).
