1. 4GB/4GB was never accepted upstream - it was one of the options for i686 machines with more than 4GB RAM (PAE etc). I expect gentoo have patches to add it. 2. Suse have fixing it for their 32-bit kernels on their ToDo list, but they have nothing at the moment.
