I think the LP is in a curious and uncomfortable place with respect to
the issue.

On the one hand, the current administration is actually trying to move
things in the right direction, and opposition parties generally don't
like (for good reasons) to give their opponents credit, especially if
the move is incremental rather than total.

On the other hand, the LP has a fairly vocal anti-immigration minority
and immigration is one of those issues where we've "agreed to
disagree" for long enough that there's probably a hesitancy to piss
that minority off by jumping in on the right side with both feet.

And, finally, it's sort of a moot point. Immigrants have been coming
to the US for two centuries and they'll keep coming for as long as
they feel like coming. As they have since the beginning, immigrants
pay more in taxes, consume less in "social benefits," and commit fewer
crimes than "natives," effectively subsidizing our pretensions to
national greatness and carrying us on their economic backs. There will
always be yahoos who want to kill the goose that lays the golden egg,
but they'll never prevail. The only question is how much taxpayer
money will be wasted making the yahoos feel like they're in control
and more "special" than the "wetbacks."
