Vic, you seem to have fallen prey to the overly simplistic black/white
labelling of politicial ideas in the US. Socialists can be conservative or
progressive. Hayek pointed out in the Road to Serfdom that conservatives tend
to be overly awed by authority, and I'm sure that you'll find many "left-wing"
Democrats exhibit that sort of awe.

You are correct that Nazism was socialism, born of liberal/progressive ideas,
but it was also marked by a philosophy of paternalism - the sort of thing that
conservatives tend to favor.

The neoconservative movement in the US today is a fine example of
conservative classic socialism. "Neocons" have no problem with big government
and socialist policies, but they want it implemented in a manner that doesn't
defeat their moral values. They may rail against welfare programs, but only
because such programs tend to break up families and encourage
single-motherhood, not because it costs the taxpayers money and expands the
government.

the nazies are the national *socialist* workers party of germany. the
nazies like the italian facists evolved from the trade union movement.

there was nothing ever right wing about the nazies or italian fascists.
