This independent study of Diebold voting machines shows why they should not be used, and the best way for most people to avoid corrupted electronic voting machines is to vote absentee. Of course, if one does that one is trusting human beings to count the votes accurately, and that is a problem in itself. Similar studies need to be conducted of other kinds of voting machines and voting machines combined with voter-verifiable paper ballots that serve as an independently auditable way to verify the electronic counts.
