A decades-old sex crime comes back with a vengeance—and shakes up the Libertarian Party By: Alex Distefano It’s no secret that in the current political climate, more Americans are experiencing a sense of frustration and even distrust towards both Democrats and Republicans. Within this two-party dichotomy, many voters are opening their minds, ears and even pocketbooks to support an alternative third party. This is where the Libertarian Party comes into the picture. In California, many Libertarians have been elected to local and state offices. According to stats from the 2008 early voter registration totals, 384,722 California voters—or 28 percent of the total registered as Libertarians—voted in the last election. Since the party’s inception in 1971, the Libertarian movement has seen a slow but steady increase in support, with a platform focused on individual freedoms and smaller government. What it probably didn’t need was a scandal to wreak havoc with the party. But that’s exactly what it got.
